“Traditional SEO is not dead. But the days of measuring success solely by rankings and traffic are quickly fading.”
It’s not the end of the world, but it is a time of massive change for digital marketing agencies, including our Power Marketing team. Starting in late 2024, SEO traffic started disappearing… and fast. Like many agencies, we’ve followed the same SEO formula since 2010 for: target keywords, create content, build backlinks, and VOILA! First page of Google with traffic we could track through analytics.
Today, everything is different.
Google now displays AI-generated summaries at the top of many search results. Platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity are increasingly being used as search tools. At the same time, marketers are reporting declining click-through rates, even when their rankings remain unchanged.
Does this mean SEO has met its end? No, but traditional SEO, as we know it, is undergoing one of the biggest transformations in its history.
Whether you’re searching for a builder to build your dream home or for the best lunch spot in town, we all use AI for search. You can find anything you want by simply typing a question. You don’t even have to look at search engine results or even visit a website.
And the battle for the best AI search is fierce. Even though ChatGPT has the largest share of AI searches, Google’s products have eroded that dominance over the last 18 months. (insert graphic)
Surprisingly, the number of traditional Google searches has almost doubled in the last year. But the number of clicks on search results is dropping. Why? Since Google upgraded its AI overview function, studies estimate that these overviews now appear in approximately 86% of Google searches, depending on the type of keywords used: transactional, informational, commercial, or transactional.
People (both B2C and B2B buyers) are still searching online for products, services, answers, and local businesses. What is changing is where and how those searches occur. Informational searches that once began on Google may now start on ChatGPT or Gemini. However, commercial and transactional searches often still lead users back to traditional search engines.
So, the SEO game is no longer based on keyword rankings, but how you appear across Google, Bing, AI search, social media, video platforms, and online communities. Your business must be visible where your potential customers are seeking answers.
One common misconception is that AI search makes search rankings and SEO irrelevant.
In reality, rankings still matter because AI systems need trusted sources from which to generate answers. The same strategy that helped rank your website is still important, just in a different way. If your company’s website has a strong organic visibility, you have an advantage when AI systems evaluate content credibility and relevance.
Rankings are more of a signal, so your website will be cited or mentioned by the AI platform. In other words, ranking well is increasingly becoming the price of admission rather than the ultimate goal.
Perhaps the biggest change facing digital marketers is the rise of zero-click search behavior.
A zero-click search occurs when users receive the information they need directly on the search results page without visiting a website. AI Overviews have accelerated this trend.
Research from Seer Interactive found that organic click-through rates on informational searches featuring AI Overviews declined by approximately 61%, while paid click-through rates dropped by roughly 68%. Other studies have reported similar trends, with users significantly less likely to click through to websites when an AI-generated summary appears.
For many organizations, this means rankings alone no longer guarantee traffic. A website may still rank first, but receive fewer visitors because users obtain their answers before clicking.
Not all searches are equally affected by AI. For example, AI-generated results are most common for informational and question-based searches. Queries such as “How does solar energy work?” or “What is semantic SEO?” are ideal candidates for AI-generated summaries. In fact, AI Overviews appeared for nearly 65% of question-form searches, according to research published in 2026.
Commercial investigation searches — where users compare products, services, or solutions — are also increasingly generating AI responses. However, navigational searches remain less affected. When users search for a specific company, website, or brand, they typically still want to visit that destination directly.
This distinction is important because it shows where traffic losses are most likely to occur and where traditional rankings continue to hold substantial value.
The future of SEO is less about keywords and more about semantic positioning.
Traditional SEO often focused on ranking a page for a specific phrase. Now modern search engines and AI systems are attempting to understand topics, relationships, entities, and user intent. In other words, businesses need to be an authority in a broader subject area.
For example, a custom home builder that consistently provides content on topics such as home design, financing, lot selection, construction timelines, energy efficiency, and local market trends creates a stronger semantic footprint than a competitor focused on isolated keyword targets. It’s less about keywords and more about the amount of useful information on the website.
AI systems increasingly evaluate these topic relationships when determining which brands deserve visibility. As Neil Patel and other SEO experts have noted, credibility, context, expertise, and authority are becoming increasingly important signals in AI-powered search environments.
Traditional SEO is not dead. But the days of measuring success solely by rankings and traffic are quickly fading. Today’s SEO professionals must think beyond the search results page. Visibility now includes AI citations, brand mentions, entity recognition, topical authority, and overall digital presence.
The companies that thrive over the next decade will be those that adapt to this broader definition of search visibility. SEO is no longer just about ranking higher. It is about becoming the most trusted source of information wherever consumers choose to search.
